How To

The Matter AI for Word feature makes it easy to use Matter AI directly within your Microsoft Word documents through a simple Add-in. Matter AI for Word has two main features:

Chat Mode (Default): Users can ask questions about their matter or document, and Matter AI will provide answers that can easily be inserted directly into the document.
Prompt Mode: Matter AI reads the contents of a document as a "prompt" and generates a detailed response based on the rules and guidelines outlined in the document.

Matter AI for Word Add-in

The Matter AI Add-in will automatically run when you open documents set as prompts.

If you do not see the add-in or you are experiencing issues with AI Prompts, you will need to manually add the feature by completing the steps below:

Open any Microsoft Word document.
Click on File > Account in the top left corner > click Get Add-ins.
Search for and then select Matter AI.
Click Add.
The License terms and Privacy policy window will pop up, click Continue.
The Matter AI Add-in will install and can be found in your Word ribbon.

If this is the first time you are using Matter Al for Word, you will need to read and agree to the terms and conditions before proceeding.

Tick the box next to "I have read and agree to the terms and conditions" and click Get Started.

You may also be prompted to sign in with your LEAP Credentials and to Connect to LEAP.

The first time you use Matter AI, it will ingest the documents within all your LEAP matters. This process assists Matter AI with providing quick responses for all Prompts subsequently run. Therefore, if you have never accessed the New Chat feature from the Matter AI tab on the LEAP ribbon, or opened a Prompt precedent, you will need to allow the AI appropriate time to ingest your LEAP matters before your first Prompt is run.

Chat Mode

You can use Matter AI's chat mode on any document or precedent open in Word, whether from within a LEAP Matter or outside of LEAP. In this mode, users can ask questions, and Matter AI will generate answers that can be easily copied or inserted directly into the currently open document, just like in the desktop app.

Select and open a matter you wish to work on.
From the Details & Correspondence tab, select any document already saved in the correspondence list, or create a new one through Forms & Precedents.
Once the document opens in Word, click Add-ins from the ribbon and select Matter AI.
Matter Al for Word will load on the right-hand side of your document, the same way as the LEAP for Word Add-in and your LEAP Matter number will display at the top.
To get started, type your question in the chat box and clickor press Enter to send.

You may also select one of the pre-populated Suggestions provided by Matter AI. These suggestions are based on the matter type and the correspondence within the current matter. Suggestion questions update in real-time depending on the previous questions you've already asked.
You can copy the text of any Matter AI-generated response or insert it directly into your document by clicking either the or icon in the bottom left corner of the response.
Save & Close your document as usual.

Documents Outside of LEAP

Matter AI can be used for any document open in WORD and can be linked to a LEAP Matter.

Open any Microsoft Word document.
Once the document opens in Word, click Add-ins from the ribbon and select Matter AI.
Matter AI for Word will load on the right hand side of your document, the same way as the LEAP for Word Add-in and will prompt you to select a matter to get started.
As you start typing, your current matters will display for you to select the relevant one for the document.
Select your matter then click .

Matter AI for Word will open, and the matter number will be displayed in the top right corner.

You can switch matters at any time by clicking the Elipses iOS.png icon in the top right corner and clicking Select Matter.

To get started, type your question in the chat box and clickor press Enter to send.

You may also select one of the pre-populated Suggestions provided by Matter AI. These suggestions are based on the matter type and the correspondence within the current matter. Suggestion questions update in real-time depending on the previous questions you've already asked.
You can copy the text of any Matter AI-generated response or insert it directly into your document by clicking either the or icon in the bottom left corner of the response.
Save & Close your document as usual.

Prompt Mode

When you open a LEAP Prompt from the Forms and Precedents tab, Matter AI will automatically read the document's contents and run it in prompt mode. The results from the prompt can then be used in a separate document or letter using one of the two Copy options covered below.

Select and open the LEAP Matter you wish to work on.
Note: Prompts are currently only available for certain matter types.
Make sure you are on the Details & Correspondence tab.
Click Forms & Precedents > Browse.

If your matter type has any prompt precedents, a shortcut link to the prompts will appear in the top folders.

Alternatively, you can search for "prompt" in the search bar and select 'In All Provinces' from the drop-down list to display all prompts.

Prompt precedents are identified by a 'PT' Precedent Code, which distinguishes them from other forms and precedents.

Choose the prompt template you wish to run.

To assist you in more easily identifying the correct Prompt to use, hover over the red dot notifications on the Prompt Precedent to see the short description. The description gives you more information on what the Prompt does before opening it.
Click Select.
The Matter AI for Word Add-in will open automatically and display on the right.

Users can refine the prompt's output by chatting with Matter AI in a conversational way, such as asking 'expand on safety concerns in more detail,' using the 'Ask me anything' chat box.

Users can edit the prompt document and click the button at the top to rerun the prompt. The document does not require saving before reloading the prompt.

Prompts can retrieve relevant facts, critical dates, and folder details just like Matter AI for LEAP Desktop using plain language instructions (e.g., "Provide an overview of evidence about each child's needs"). However, currently it can not access information from cards or tables in a LEAP matter.

The Reload Last Prompt Session feature automatically reloads the last prompt session for any prompts saved to a matter. This allows users to easily reopen previous sessions and modify either the prompt or the last output using Canvas. Moving forward, this feature will apply to all newly generated prompts.

The 'Reload Last Prompt Session' feature only affects prompts that are saved to a matter. Prompt precedents will continue to function as before, opening and running as new each time.
For prompts that have already been saved to matters, these prompts will continue to run as they were until they are opened and resaved.

Canvas now gives users more control over the AI generated content. No more having Matter AI regenerate full responses just to tweak a paragraph. The Canvas feature turns the AI output into an editable canvas, helping you improve, add, or remove text in the response based on both the selected text and the instruction used.

Use the feature by:
- Selecting the relevant text section of the AI response.
- Ask Matter AI follow-up questions or provide new instructions specific to the selected text; or
- Have Matter AI regenerate just that selected text; or
- Remove any part of the selected text response that you don’t want.
You can click Filter to choose whether the prompt will run on:
- Entire matter
- Folders
- Documents
- Fact pages
Click Reload to continue and run the prompt again.

Filtering your data ensures you receive more relevant results.
When you are satisfied with your prompt response, scroll to the bottom of the window and select one of the two Copy options.
Click the Insert In button to open the associated Precedent or Document Type. Once it is generated, the response will be automatically inserted in the appropriate cursor location.
Selecting the Insert In option will also cause the Prompt precedent to close at this time.
The Insert In button will only appear where there is an associated Precedent or Document Type. If the Insert In button is not available, or you want to insert the response somewhere else, you can use the second Copy option.
Click the Copy icon to copy the response to your clipboard. Navigate to your chosen location and Paste the prompt response.
Close your prompt document where you used the Copy feature.

Where you need to run multiple prompts for a Precedent or Document Type you are working on, use the Insert In button to open and insert the first AI prompt response, then use the Copy icon for all other prompt responses to copy/paste where required in the open Precedent or Document Type.

Prompt Library

For the most current prompt precedents, users can browse through Forms & Precedents. The Prompt Library remains available and is continuously updated by the LEAP team of legal experts.

Creating your own Custom Prompts

A new Document Type called the 'Blank Prompt Template' is now available to allow you to easily create your own Custom Prompt Precedents:

From the Details & Correspondence tab, click on Forms & Precedents.
Make sure you're on the Browse tab.
Navigate to the 'Folder location' where you would like the Prompt Precedent created.
Right-click anywhere in the 'Browse' window within that folder.
Select New from the list.
Select Word or Excel Precedent from the list.
In the 'Document Type' window, select the Blank Prompt Template and the 'Recipient' being None.
Select OK.

The 'Blank Prompt Template' document will open in Word.

As the Prompt Template is blank, you will be prompted with a message in the Matter AI window to enter your specific instructions or template.
Copy and Paste your Prompt from an existing Prompt and amend accordingly or Type your Prompt from scratch.

Ensure you select the Reload button to enable the output to be regenerated.
Select Save and Close to save your Precedent.

The 'Rename' window will pop up.
Enter the new name for your Precedent and click OK.

As this is now a 'Custom Precedent', it will appear blue in your folder location. It will also be saved with the AI icondisplayed to the left of the Custom Precedent.

Ensure you start these steps in the Browse tab in the Forms & Precedents window to make the Prompt available in all matters. Creating a 'Blank Prompt Template' from the Document Type window in a LEAP matter will only apply it to that matter.

You may receive a pop up to download the LEAP Web Installer, go ahead an install and run the file.

When Microsoft for Web has fininshed installing you can select Open LEAP for Microsoft Office.

The Matter AI for Word pane will load automatically and will start reading the prompt and produce an output of the prompt or it will ask for any clarifying questions.
